How to sell underwater photographs
How to sell Underwater Photographs Many underwater photographers consider selling their photographs, which is quite understandable given the high cost of camera and diving equipment, and the expense of traveling to many locations. However, as with many other moneymaking activities, it is not as easy to make a living by selling underwater photographs as it may at first appear. Legal requirements must be satisfied in order to comply with legislation in different countries. Such regulations cover diving, as well as aspects like insurance, taxation and record keeping. Only once these requirements have been satisfied can an underwater photographer go about selling his or her photographs. This is also time consuming, but the more effort put into selling pictures, the more likely sales become. At this point, it is worth noting that there is a market for underwater photographs of the highest quality alone. Many underwater photographers try to make money out of their pictures, and standards are very high indeed. Only well-composed, technically adept photographs will make money. Even then, the subject must be a saleable one (like humpback whale). Pictures of rare and beautiful sea slugs are –sadly- unlikely to sell very often. As many shots are of natural history subjects, these have to be identified and captioned correctly, including the formal scientific name. This requires either detailed knowledge of the field or a lot of research. Perhaps one of the easiest ways of selling underwater photographs is to submit articles to diving magazines, thus supplying both text and pictures (although this is unlikely to provide a huge amount of income). To do so requires an understanding of the types of article that such magazines publish, and the style and content that they use. As this means using photographs to illustrate an article in a specific way, it is useful to have a subject in mind before taking them. When taking photographs to illustrate an article, it is also important to consider accompanying above water shots. It is not enough merely to take underwater pictures. Fortunately, diving trips often take place in locations offering marvellous opportunities for above water photography. Photographic agencies and libraries provide another outlet for underwater photographs. Most require a good throughput of very high quality material, but while some will yield a steady flow of income, most are unlikely to provide more than a trickle. Given the time and effort required to take and catalogue underwater photographs, it is difficult to make a significant income from them. In fact, unless you are prepared to commit significant amounts of time and energy to marketing your photographs, it is unlikely that you will recoup the cost of taking them. One way to enhance the marketability of the photographs is to write articles and infused them with information on marine natural history and marine conservation. On a worldwide basis, very few underwater photographers make their living from underwater photography alone, and many have additional sources of income.
