Maintaining your underwater camera

Maintaining your underwater camera and equipment

After spending hundreds of dollars on your new underwater camera, you need to know how to maintain it before, during and after a dive drip. Here are some advises.

Before a trip
Before leaving on a dive trip, make sure that all your equipment and most importantly the underwater camera is functioning properly. It is best to do this in advance so that you will have amble time to get replacement if necessary. Depending on how remote and exotic your destination is, it will be advisable to assemble some spare items and tools before leaving for the trip. Example

1. Spare camera batteries
2. Extra film or storage media
3. Extra o-rings
4. Lens cleaning cloth and liquid
5. General purpose pliers, screwdrivers, tweezers
6. Extra strobe sync cord
7. Foreign adaptor plugs

O-rings
A common question in underwater photography is how to maintain the o-rings. Some people remove and clean it after every dive. Some goes as far as examining it under a magnifying glass. Others, on the other end of the spectrum, have not touch the o-rings in years or ever. What should you do? Always start of by reading the manufacturer recommendations, and then err on the side of caution.

Example some manufacturer recommend that you do not remove the main housing o-ring unless it needs to be replaced. Wipe it clean if necessary, and rub a slight amount of grease on it. While others may recommend that the o-ring on the lens port needs to be greased only when the port is changed. There are numerous o-ring in a typical underwater camera and housings. These o-ring typically need to be changed by the manufacturer once every one to three years.

The most important thing is to check the main o-ring of the housing or underwater camera just before you close it. Any lint, dust, dirt or even hair may cause a leak, resulting in major problems.

Always check for leaks
You should make it a habit to take your camera housing underwater without the camera at the start of the dive. This will ensure your camera is safe if the housing is leaking.

Rinsing
After every dive, it is important to rinse your equipment including the underwater camera with fresh water. If fresh water is not available, you can keep it immersed in salt water, so that the salt does not crystallised and damage the camera. After rinsing, dry everything including yourself, so that you do not drip water when you open the camera or housing. In addition, do not open the underwater camera on an open boat or anywhere where there is water spray. Allow everything to dry thoroughly before disassembling for the travel home.

Have a great underwater diving and photography trip!
